Description

The Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) provides one of the main paradigms for understanding the emergence of thermal behavior in isolated quantum many-body systems. Recent developments in quantum dynamics have highlighted that a deeper understanding of quantum chaos and thermalization requires going beyond the standard ETH ansatz by considering higher-order correlations, a framework that can be naturally formulated using mathematical tools from free probability theory. In this talk I will discuss recent progress in this direction, focusing on how the property of local rotational invariance refines the full ETH framework. I will then briefly present how these ideas are connected to the notion of freeness, illustrating how free probability provides a unifying framework for understanding the behavior of complex quantum systems.
