Description

Engineered quantum systems provide unprecedented opportunities to design, control, and explore quantum phenomena. Platforms such as superconducting circuits and optomechanical systems offer remarkable flexibility in tailoring interactions between electromagnetic and mechanical degrees of freedom, opening new avenues for quantum technologies as well as for fundamental studies of quantum dynamics.
Dissipation, however, is an unavoidable ingredient of any realistic quantum system and is conventionally regarded as detrimental: coupling to an environment leads to loss of coherence and ultimately limits quantum control. This perspective changes when the interaction with the environment itself becomes an object of engineering. Rather than merely suppressing dissipation, one can tailor dissipative processes and exploit them as an active resource for controlling quantum dynamics.
In this talk, I will discuss how deliberately engineered dissipation can give rise to functionality that would be difficult to achieve through coherent interactions alone. I will illustrate how the interplay of coherent dynamics, dissipation, and external driving can be harnessed to steer quantum systems toward desired behavior and generate nontrivial quantum phenomena. These ideas highlight a broader shift in perspective: the environment need not only be an adversary of quantum control, but can become an integral part of the quantum-engineering toolbox.
