Description
SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) will be a fixed-target experiment at CERN’s SPS designed to probe long-lived feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in the GeV range. Installed in a dedicated beam-dump facility in the ECN3 cavern, SHiP will use 400 GeV/c SPS protons to accumulate $6\cdot10^{20}$ protons on target over 15 years, while reducing backgrounds from the intense muon and neutrino flux to a negligible level. An essential component is the Surrounding Background Tagger (SBT), which encloses a 50 m helium-filled decay volume and tags charged particles entering from the sides as well as inelastic interactions occurring in the Helium or within the SBT itself. The SBT consists of aluminum cells filled with a liquid scintillator. Each cell contains two wavelength-shifting optical modules (WOMs) that detect scintillation light produced when charged particles traverse the detector. This contribution presents the SBT, its design and functionality, as well as simulation studies investigating the suppression of the muon-induced background.
